Principal's Message/Mensaje de la Directora

Welcome to East Los Angeles Renaissance Academy!

My name is Mrs. Avila Watson, and I am the proud Principal of ELARA. As a lifelong learner and dedicated educator, I am honored to lead a school community where student voice, college-going culture, and high-quality instruction drive everything we do!

I began my journey in education by getting my High School Diploma from LAUSD and then being one of the first in my family to receive a degree from a university; UC Santa Barbara, to be exact. Go Gauchos! I started my science teaching career right after college in the city of Huntington Park where I worked on inspiring Middle and High school students for 12 years. As my career progressed, I decided to earn my Administrator’s Credential and Master’s in School Leadership from CSU Dominguez Hills. This allowed me to shift into being a school Assistant Principal at Marquez High-SSJ and then Principal at ELARA in August of 2022.

My passion for education was shaped by my own experience growing up in challenging circumstances—proof that where we start does not determine where we end up. I believe deeply that no matter what hardships students may have faced, their future is not set in concrete. They have the power to keep writing and rewriting their story!

At ELARA, we don’t just prepare students for graduation—we prepare them to reach beyond high school and pursue their college and career dreams with confidence. We believe in developing young leaders who will shape not only their future but also the future of their community.

I hope to help all of you become proud graduates…proud ELARA graduates followed by being proud college graduates, so here at ELARA, our students know what to do when I say, “Class of…”—because we are focused on graduating every student with purpose, pride, and the skills to thrive.

¡Bienvenidos a East Los Angeles Renaissance Academy!

Mi nombre es la Sra. Avila Watson y tengo el orgullo de ser la directora de ELARA. Como educadora dedicada y aprendiz de por vida, me siento honrada de liderar una comunidad escolar donde la voz estudiantil, la cultura universitaria y la instrucción de alta calidad guían todo lo que hacemos.

Mi camino en la educación comenzó con un diploma de preparatoria de LAUSD y luego fui una de las primeras en mi familia en obtener un título universitario en UC Santa Barbara. ¡Go Gauchos! Empecé mi carrera en la enseñanza en Ciencias en Huntington Park, trabajando con estudiantes de secundaria y preparatoria por 12 años. Más adelante obtuve mi credencial de administración y una maestría en liderazgo educativo de CSU Dominguez Hills, lo cual me llevó a ser subdirectora en Marquez High-SSJ y, desde agosto de 2022, directora de ELARA.

Mi pasión por la educación nace de haber vivido circunstancias difíciles en mi niñez. Creo firmemente que nuestro origen no define nuestro destino. Ningún obstáculo determina el futuro de nuestros estudiantes. Ellos tienen el poder de escribir y reescribir su historia.

En ELARA, no solo preparamos a los estudiantes para graduarse, sino para ir más allá y lograr sus sueños universitarios y profesionales. Nuestro objetivo es formar líderes que transformen sus vidas y las de sus comunidades.

Espero verlos convertirse en graduados orgullosos de ELARA… y luego, ¡en orgullosos graduados universitarios! Aquí en ELARA, cuando yo digo "¡Clase del...!", nuestros estudiantes saben exactamente qué hacer—porque trabajamos para que cada uno se gradúe con propósito, orgullo y las herramientas para prosperar.
