AVID—Advancement Via Individual Determination—fosters a safe and open culture, high expectations for teachers and students, and collaboration in all classrooms. AVID is a nationally college and career readiness program offered as an academic elective at East Los Angeles Renaissance Academy.

AVID provides scaffolded support that educators and students need to encourage college and career readiness and success. Student learning is supported in all our classrooms through WICOR strategies.
AVID prepares students for college through:
- W-writing skills to communicate their thinking
- I- inquiry to analyze ideas and ask questions
- C-collaboration and problem solving in teams
- O-organization to keep track of progress and deadlines
- R-reading skills to understand rigorous texts
AVID By Grade Level
At Renaissance, we currently offer one 11th grade AVID section and are excited to expand the program to include a 12th grade section.
In AVID11, students...
- explore different types of colleges and universities
- learn about the college application process & requirements
- learn about Financial Aid
- visit college and universities
- explore future careers
In AVID12, students will...
- apply to colleges and universities
- apply to financial aid
- apply to scholarships
- polish their resume and participate in mock interviews
ELARA AVID SITE TEAM GOALS 2024-2025
1. By June 2025, all students will engage in at least 3 college and career awareness and/or preparation activities per year. We hope to increase their opportunity knowledge, as well as improve SES results.
2. By June 2025, AVID Elective classes & Advisory students of AVID site members will routinely use organizational tools, such as binders, progress report checks, and goal setting charts to: 1) keep track of coursework and 2) organize their time and learning. We will measure this quarterly through their progress reports to increase rates of “C” or better.
